Minke whale season on the Great Barrier Reef, primarily for swimming encounters, is generally from June to July. This is the peak migration period when the whales move from Antarctic waters to Far North Queensland, Ribbon Reefs. While they can be sighted between May and August, the majority of encounters occur during these two months.
Humpback whale season along the NSW/QLD coast typically runs from May to November, with peak sighting periods in June-July. The whales migrate north to breed and give birth in warmer waters of northern Australia. Humpback Whales can also be spotted in waters off the Kimberley coast in Western Australia.
The Turtle nesting season is during summer months November - January on the islands and remote beaches of the Great Barrier Reef and the Kimberley, with turtles hatching January – April. Peak locations to encounter turtle nesting include Queensland islands from Lady Elliot Island to Heron Island and Broome in Western Australia.
Coral spawning on the Great Barrier Reef generally occurs at night, usually within a few days (2-6 days) after the full moon, typically in November or December. The exact timing can vary slightly based on location and water temperature. In Western Australia spawning occurs at Ningaloo Reef typically March – April.
Manta rays are most frequently seen around the islands and reef edges of the Southern Great Barrier Reef and Coral Bay in Western Australia. While they can be spotted throughout the year, the peak season for manta ray sightings is during May – August.
Whale sharks are most frequently seen at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia between March and August each year. This is when they migrate to the area to feed on plankton and krill following the coral spawning. The peak viewing season is typically from mid-March to late July, with sightings continuing into August and sometimes even later. Occasionally they can be spotted in Queensland waters.
The Orca (killer whale) season in Bremer Bay, Western Australia, typically runs from January to April. This is the best time to see the Southern Hemisphere's largest pod of killer whales, particularly within the Bremer Canyon.
